| The three districts of the Upper Capital(上京), the Central Capital(中京) and the Eastern Capital(东京), which the Liao Dynasty ruled over, were mainly nomadic area. The areas which belonged to the two districts of the Western Capital (西京) and the Southern Capital (南京) gave priority to farming and the best-developed agriculture in the Southern Capital area furnished the Liao Dynasty with wealth in great quantity. The inscriptions unearthed in the tomb of Wangze showed that “the military strengthen of the Southern Capital was the most powerful nationwide and the taxes collected there composed half of that of the whole country.” |
