Located in the western suburbs of Beijing, the Military Exercise Hall in the Circular City was built in 1749 by Qing Emperor Qian Long. It is the only military architecture complex, including palaces, pavilions and a drill grand. The Military Exercise Hall in the Circular City is not only where the Qing Manchurian army conducted Manchurian troops. The has a unique style and is a grand spectacle. From north to south are the Circular City, the Hall of Military Exercise, drill ground, pavilion of Shisheng Temple and the Hall of Pines.
The Circular City has an oval shape--50 meters from east to west and 40 meters from north to south. It is 11 meters high and 5 meters wide and is only 190 meters in circumference. It is regarded as the smallest city in the world. There are two towers in the city. In the north tower, there is a huge stele on which is inscribed The Postscript of Shisheng Temple written by Qian Long, which extolled the triumphs of the Manchurian soldiers when they put down Zhunge'er rebellions. The Hall of Military Exercise has a platform in front where Emperor Qian Long and other emperors reviewed parades by the elite Manchurian troops. The big drill ground is 300 mu in area and has become a peach garden with a beautiful view. The Inscription of Shisheng Temple recorded the event that Emperor Qian Long pacified rebellions in Jinchuan as well as the evolution of the temple. The Hall of Pines is surrounded by green trees. It is a peaceful and quiet place where Qian Long used to feast and offer bounties to his army. The Circular City puts the martial arts to the best use. It has hosted three large-scale martial arts activities in association with the martial arts organizations and has warmly hosted enthusiasts from all over the country.
