Hit: 2006-7-25 0:26:57

The Ancient Bell Museum is located in the Great Bell Temple. Built in 1733, this temple was originally named the Temple of Awakening the Living and occupied an area of 30,000 square meters. It was an important place where emperors used to conduct elaborate ceremonies with bells to pray for rain during periods of drought. It houses the country's largest bell, named the Yongle Bell after Ming Emperor Yongle, hence it is also known as the Great Bell Temple. First opened in October 1985, this in the only museum dedicated to collecting, exhibiting, studying and exploiting ancient bells and spreading bell culture. This museum houses more than a hundred ancient bells of different shapes and sizes. It also houses several thousand research documents about bells. Many tourists from home and abroad are attracted to this beautiful temple's environment by its unique exhibitions and interesting activities. The Yongle Bell resounds on the New Year, Spring Festival and other important occasions.

In 1985, the government appropriated special funds to repair the Great Temple. In 1996, other funds from the government enabled the museum to extend its exhibition area to 3,000 square meters. It also renewed the basic exhibition items and more than 400 other items were displayed. It is a wonderful place for people from all over the world to learn more about the history of ancient Chinese bells.
